Gulf Shores Year-Round Lifeguards: Safer Beaches, Stronger Demand
WKRG put it simply: the beach doesn’t have an off-season. Gulf Shores just made sure the lifeguards don’t either.
In mid-August, WKRG reported that Gulf Shores is expanding lifeguard coverage beyond the old spring-to-fall tourism window. Beach Safety Chief Joethan Phillips said guards are now on the sand year-round so they’re already there when something happens — not coming from a station after a call.
“It’s still warm all the way through December at least. Any time the weather is warm, people are wanting to come to the beach and enjoy it, so it’s going to be busy throughout the year,” Phillips told WKRG.
A follow-up from FOX10 noted the city doubled full-time, year-round lifeguard positions (from six to twelve) and is investing about $400,000 a year in those roles. Seasonal towers wind down as summer fades; the year-round team shifts to patrol trucks and side-by-sides so they can cover more shoreline and talk to people before a problem starts.

- Year-round staff on the beach, not only during peak season
- Focus on prevention as much as rescue — patrol, conversation, presence
- Coverage that matches how we actually use the Gulf: mild fall and winter days, holiday weeks, and shoulder-season weekends

Why This Matters for Gulf Shores Real Estate
Buyers and guests don’t just shop square footage. They shop how a place feels in January as much as in July. Year-round lifeguard presence is one more signal that Gulf Shores is building for a 12-month coast, not a three-month tourist town.
That lines up with what we already see on the ground:
- More visitors arriving in shoulder months thanks to nonstop flights into Gulf Shores International
- Families who want a second home they can use at Thanksgiving, Christmas break, and spring break - not only Memorial-to-Labor Day
- Owners of condos and vacation homes who need occupancy outside peak summer to make the numbers work
- Full-time residents who simply want a safer public beach in front of the community they chose
Safer, better-staffed public beaches support the whole product: walk-to-sand condos, West Beach and Gulf Place addresses still put you minutes from a guarded shoreline. When the city invests in year-round safety, it protects the lifestyle that holds values and rental demand.
