Baldwin County, Alabama

The largest county in the state, Baldwin County, Alabama includes part of Mobile Bay and covers 22,027 square miles. This county is larger than the states of Delaware or Rhode Island, and as of 2018, was home to more than 218,000 people.

History buffs will enjoy the story of how the county seat was moved to Bay Minette from Daphne in 1900. History reports that the State Legislature had ruled the county seat be moved to Bay Minette. Many of the locals disagreed with the ruling and refused to obey. Some of the men of Bay Minette joined in a plot to convince the Sheriff and deputies that a murder had been committed. They had the Sheriff and his deputies out chasing a fictitious murderer late into the night. As planned, they broke into the Courthouse late that night in Daphne and stole the county records. They took the records to Bay Minette where they remain until this day. There is a plaque that hangs in the lobby of the Bay Minette Courthouse commemorating the event. It is titled, "The New Deal".

Ask locals about the Fairhope Jubilee! This is a natural marine phenomenon where crustaceans and bottom-dwelling fish become very easy to catch, so residents rush down to the water with their buckets and gear. It typically occurs in August, but can also happen at other times during the summer months, just before dawn.

Fort Morgan

FortMorganPlantationNamed after a historic military fort, Fort Morgan is a picturesque unincorporated community located west of Gulf Shores. The grounds offer more than just history, however. The site also has nature areas, a boat launch, picnic areas, and beaches for visitors to enjoy. This area features quiet, beautiful beaches and easy access to the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. The name Bon Secour comes from the French words meaning “safe harbor,” very appropriate considering the sanctuary for native flora and fauna that Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge provides.

Within yards of the Alabama coastline at Fort Morgan, there is a legendary fishing spot. Dixey Bar, often misspelled Dixie, is a shallow sand bar on the east side of the Mobile Bay ship channel just off Fort Morgan. The bar is named after the clipper ship Robert H. Dixey, which disintegrated on the bar in 1860 when a hurricane caused it to break free from its anchor lines in Mobile Bay.
